3rd International Symposium Stem Cell, Development and Regulation
October 27-29, 2009 Krasnapolsky Hotel Amsterdam Registration is open.
Symposium Announcement
JNI-symposium The Stem of Cancer November 13, 2009 Cancer stem cells represent the main theme of the 3rd "Josephine Nefkens Symposium" to be held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, on November 13, 2009. The symposium is organized under the auspices of the Josephine Nefkens Institute, the Erasmus Medical Center, and of the MCSCs (www.mcscs.eu) and SCDD (www.stemcells.nl) stem cell research consortia.
The general aim of the international symposium is to gather the thought-leaders in cancer stem cell biology from around the world and to foster a discussion of ideas. To this aim, a total of 8 lectures will be delivered with the point of educating an audience, but also to outline current level of knowledge and to act as a baseline to stimulate discussion.
Invited speakers (and related topics) will include:
Hans Clevers (intestinal stem cells in homeostasis and cancer), Gabriela Dontu (breast CSCs), Frank Markus (melanoma CSCs), Louis Parada (brain CSCs), Michael Clarke (colon CSCs and CSC resistance to ionizing radiation), Christoph Klein (disseminated CSCs), Thomas Brabletz (EMT and CSC), and Riccardo Fodde (Wnt signaling and cancer stemness).
The website for the registration of the Symposium The Stem of Cancer is now open (www.thestemofcancer.org).
We are looking forward to seeing you in Rotterdam on Nov. 13, 2009!

From yeast to man: Comparative Gene Function Analysis
Contact person: Dr. P.E.M. Taschner, Phone: 071-5269624 Date: 10-14 March, 2008 Location: Leiden Duration: 5 days
This course intends to show the usefulness of multi-species approaches in the analysis of gene function. One can search for a suitable model system depending on the problem at hand. Each model system provides its specific advantages, powerful techniques, and certain limitations. In the course a variety of cases will be presented, which will serve to prove this point. Furthermore, the cases presented will provide the students with an overview of specific possibilities of various model organisms especially yeast, Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila and the mouse. The various genome projects will implicitly serve as a framework for the structure of the course.

The symposium will take place on August 18-21, 2008 in Copenhagen, Denmark (organized by Kristian Helin and Arne Svejgaard, Copenhagen, and Jesper Q. Svejstrup, London). The symposium will feature lectures by 24 invited scientists as well as posters and oral poster-presentations selected from submitted abstracts. Attendance will be limited to 150 scientific participants totally. Registration fee: 4,000 DKK (± € 500). For details, see www.benzon-symposia.dk and the symposium poster.
Stem Cells, Development and Regulation

ESTOOLS Winter School on hES and iPS cells
Saariselka – Finland, January 26th-30th 2009.
ESTOOLS, a European Commission funded consortium under the FP6 program, gathers the cutting edge expertise from the European Research Area on human embryonic stem (hES) and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Since a year, and Yamanaka's discovery of iPS cell derivation, the whole field is booming, but only very few scientists gather enough hES experience to make the best of the new possibilities. ESTOOLS, dedicated to disseminate knowledge across the international scientific community, is setting up a top-level winterschool to offer a chance to a limited amount of participants (30 places only are open to non-ESTOOLS scientists) to have a full update on latest techniques and developments. This will take place from the 26th to the 30th of January 2009, in Saariselka (Finnish Lapland). Applications will be closed on the 31st October 2008.
If you are too late, please contact me at: sduprat@estools.eu in order to join the waiting list. Please find out the programme (and its prestigious speakers), the registration and other venue details at:

DPTE The 'Dutch Program for Tissue Engineering' (DPTE) is a consortium of research groups from most Dutch universities and academic hospitals, several research institutes, ZonMw, STW and pioneering companies. DPTE's research program integrates the broad range of required research disciplines into the platform technologies of stem cells, scaffolds and bioreactors. The DPTE connects these technologies with clinical applications cardiovascular, calcified tissue, cartilage and skin. DPTE comprises a total research budget of more than M€ 50.
